Identifying les sons initiaux en français is an important skill because it helps them learn how to identify sounds in words, and see relationships between different words. This will then translate into orthographic mapping skills as they learn to read in French.

Here are some other ways you can use this French phonological awareness activity:
- Splat – choose 2 students to compete against each other. Give them each a fly swatter. Lay cards out on the carpet and call a beginning sound. First one to swat the correct pair wins a point! You can also do this by identifying which of the cards doesn’t have the same first sound (or which one does have the same beginning sound in French)
- Beginning sound identification – choose a card and ask students to identify what the beginning sound is. Have them write the letter down on a whiteboard
- Generating words – choose a card and ask students to provide other words with that beginning sound
