#1 SPLAT!

This activity is so easy to put together, you’ll want to use it daily. First, you’ll need French alphabet cards and two fly swatters. Lay the alphabet cards out on a table or the floor. Then, have two students stand in front of the cards with a fly swatter.

Read a letter out loud, and students will race to SPLAT! the correct letter. The first student to get it right continues into the next round. Click here to grab the alphabet cards pictured below for free!

#2 Alphabet Mats

Another way to practice alphabet recognition is with alphabet matching mats. There are several ways you can fix up this activity. Students can pair the upper and lower case letters together, separate the lower case from the upper case letters, and fill in the blank with letters.

This is a great center activity, and it’s easy to differentiate for students who are at different levels! I have a ready-to-go alphabet mat that makes putting this center together even easier. Students fill in the mat with the missing pieces, and they can also sort and match the letter pieces.

Alphabet mats are a perfect kindergarten centre to work on alphabet recognition and 1-1 correspondence.

#3 Boom Cards

If you love a low-maintenance center or independent activity, you’ll love this French alphabet idea. Boom cards are essentially self-correcting digital task cards, which means there is no grading. And no more catching errors three days after the activity has been completed! This helps students get instant feedback and grow their alphabet recognition skills.

I have a Boom Card desk for both matching lower case to upper case and upper case to lower case. Each Boom Card desk comes with 26 cards and involves zero prep!

#4 Alphabet Puzzles

Alphabet puzzles are a great self-correcting alphabet recognition activity, especially if you lack technology in your classroom. With an alphabet puzzle, students match together the upper case and lower case letters. What makes it self-correcting is that the cards have an image. When matched together correctly, they will have a correctly completed image.

To increase the challenge, place sticky notes over the images on the cards. After students have paired the alphabet pieces together, reveal the image to see if it’s correct!

You can get the alphabet puzzle here! Simply print the pages, cut, and laminate them if you want.

#5 Alphabet Stamping

Who doesn’t love stamps? Personally, I love these Educational Insights and Melisa and Doug stamps. This French alphabet idea is hands-on and makes alphabet recognition so fun, your students will forget they are learning. Essentially, students will stamp the page with the corresponding letter stamp. I have a FREE French stamping page that you can download here.
