We all know that books can be powerful tools! Not only are they fun, but they can reinforce phonics skills, grammar, syntax, and more. But books don’t just fit into your literacy lessons. They can be a great addition to your science lessons! I wanted to specifically share some French books about animals that go perfectly with your Growth and Changes in Animals unit.
Check out my favorite French books about animals below. These books are great to put in your classroom library or as read alouds with your class!

Animal Book #1: Patience, petite chenille!
Patience, petite chenille is a fictional book about an impatient caterpillar who finds out that he can become a butterfly, but it takes two whole weeks! This story introduces the concept of life cycles and will have students giggling throughout the entire book!
Animal Book #2: Quels drôles d’yeux!
Quels drôles d’yeux! Explores various different animals, like squids, chameleons, and more. It talks about the eyes of various different animals, plus some other fun facts about each insect and animal. Each page shows a photo of the animal as well as a person with that animal’s eyes (which I think is a little spooky, but the kids love it).
Animal Book #3: La première neige de Petit Hibou
La première neige de Petit Hibou is about an owl, Petit Hibou, who is excited for his first winter. He talks to many animals all around the forest and learns what they’re all doing during the winter. This book is great for discussing and exploring the winter adaptations many animals have.
Animal Book #4: Cycle de vie: Le têtard et la grenouille
Cycle de vie: Le têtard et la grenouille is a non-fiction book about animals that explains the life cycle of a frog. It goes in-depth on each part of the life cycle and covers topics such as camouflage, physical features, how they eat, and more. There are many other books about animals and their life cycle in this series, such as chickens, bees, butterflies, sharks, and more.
Animal Book #5: Qui va gagner? Combat ultime des reptiles
Qui va gagner? Combat ultime des reptiles compares 16 different reptiles’ anatomy, behaviour, and more. In the book, it compares two animals together and then talks about who would win. It’s full of fun facts, and it has a unique take on showcasing animals. There are other books about animals in this series, like polar bear vs grizzly and crab vs lobster.
